Über den Künstler

Am 4. Februar 1943 wird Otto Lohmüller in Gengenbach im Schwarzwald geboren, wo er bis heute lebt und arbeitet. Dort geht er zur Schule und tritt 1952 den Pfadfindern bei. Ein Jahr später wechselt er auf das humanistische Gymnasium in Offenburg. Als Zehnjähriger wird er mit der Mythologie und Kunst der Griechen vertraut und entdeckt für sich, tief beeindruckt, die Skulpturen und die Malerei Michelangelos.

Der gelernte Retuscheur bildet sich als Maler und Zeichner selbst aus. Reisen innerhalb Deutschlands, nach Italien und Frankreich, wo er intensiv Museen und Kunststätten aufsucht, prägen sein späteres Schaffen, wobei ihn die Begegnung mit dem Werk Caravaggios stark beeinflusst.

Freundschaften mit Künstlern und Schriftstellern wie Pierre Joubert, Serge Dalens, Jean-Louis Foncine, Michel Tournier, Wim van der Kant, Heinrich Eichen, Dieter Vollmer, u. a. erweitern seinen Themenkreis und lassen ihn als Illustrator tätig werden. Auch wird Otto Lohmüller selbst als Autor aktiv.

Otto Lohmüllers Werk ist darüber hinaus von seiner persönlichen Lebenswelt geprägt: seit 1969 verheiratet mit Ute Lohmüller ist er Vater zweier erwachsener Söhne, geboren 1975 und 1977, sowie Großvater zweier Enkelinnen. Er ist engagiert im lokalen und internationalen Pfadfinderwesen und der Fastnachtstradition seiner Heimatstadt Gengenbach, sowie der Naturistenbewegung ideell und aktiv verbunden. On February, 4th 1943 Otto Lohmüller is born in Gengenbach, located in Germany's Black Forest, where he lives and works, still today. It is there where he goes to school and, in 1952, joins the Boy Scouts. One year later, he moves on to the humanistic highschool of nearby Offenburg. The ten-year-old becomes familiar with Ancient Greek mythology and art, and discovers by himself - deeply impressed - the sculptures and paintings by Michelangelo.

A professional retouch artist, he educates himself as painter and designer. Travels within Germany and to Italy and France, where he extensively visits museums and art sites, help coin his his later creativity, while the encounter with the work of Caravaggio is a profound impression.
